Description
The Control System Specialist reports to the National Maintenance Excellence Manager and is responsible for optimizing the efficiency and reliability of MHE control systems.
Responsibilities
- Implementing a robust support documentation system for drive troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), controls narratives, and testing protocols for new and existing systems.
- Reading and troubleshooting machine electrical drawings.
- Configuring PLC message instructions and network settings.
- Supporting the development of enterprise-wide hardware, programming, and documentation strategies and standards for controls and drives systems.
- Assisting with the training of Central region controls specialists, electricians, and automation technicians.
- Supporting the work of outside contractors and consultants on specifying equipment, controls, drives, and system installs as necessary.
- Support Purolator operations and contribute to overall uptime by supporting during and outside business hours (if required).
- Contribute to root cause analysis activities and corrective/preventive action plans by identifying failure trends, recommending sustainable solutions, supporting implementation of change management procedures, and helping prevent future operational disruptions.
- Maintaining awareness of new capabilities and technologies as they relate to controls, drives, and web handling. When applicable, supporting the implementation and adoption of new technologies.
- Partnering with Material Handling Equipment Integrator and other supplier groups in the testing & performance validation of the systems.
- Supporting the definition and implementation of the equipment-based control systems for the new hub. Engaging both vendors, IT, and operations to ensure a functional system is established and executed.
Additional Responsibilities
- Conveyor, scanning, vision, and weighing controls system experience in a high-volume, 24x7, high-speed package sortation environment.
- Technical proficiency with PLC and / or PC-based control systems (Siemens Step 7 ladder logic, and Simatic drives and controls).
- HMI SCADA (Wonderware) configuration and design.
- Knowledgeable of AutoCAD, NavisWorks, or Revit.
- Strong Data Analysis Development skills are must.
- Proficient with general MS Office software.
- General health and safety knowledge (Ontario OHSA, ESA, CSA, ULC, etc.).
- Risk Management skills to assist in the identification, evaluation, and prioritization of risks.
- Ability to operate independently and engage with business operations as needed.
Experience & Education
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in electrical, Mechatronics, Automation, or Controls Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience supporting automated material handling systems in logistics, parcel, e-commerce, or manufacturing environments.
- Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting and supporting Siemens and/or Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, VFDs, industrial networks, and machine safety systems.
- Experience commissioning new automation equipment, leading controls upgrades, and implementing system performance improvements is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex electrical, controls, and automation issues in high-speed conveyor and sortation systems.
- Experience applying CMMS data, reliability engineering principles, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies to improve equipment performance.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with Operations, Maintenance, IT, vendors, and engineering teams.
Language Requirement: Proficiency in English is required for this position due to the frequent communications that must be conducted in English with various stakeholders. This requirement is justified by the nature of the responsibilities and operational needs.
