Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance Corporate Services, the Director, Corporate Accounting provides leadership, strategic direction and drives all continuous improvement efforts: in the build, management and sustainment of the corporate accounting shared services portfolio; effective ICFR management; effective management of tax planning and treasury functions; prepares presentations to Leadership on Corporate Accounting, ICFR, Tax & Treasury portfolios; and provides guidance, oversight and subject matter expertise on highly complex and technical accounting activities and issues.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

    • Strategic oversight for establishing and delivering sustained value through a Corporate Accounting shared services function, leveraging understanding risk and opportunities for optimizing success. Monitors and evaluates KPI and SLA success factors and aligns with the rest of the Corporate Accounting and Finance Shared Services team; manages execution, measures against forecasted savings, efficiencies and benefits, and reports to Senior Director, Finance Corporate Services and CFO.
    • The Director will be specifically responsible for team oversight of the entire Corporate Accounting shared services portfolio, providing sound strategic financial advice, leading ICFR compliance reporting and governance obligations, and the Tax and Treasury activities in alignment with Purolator’s growth strategy including developing, embedding and maintaining strong financial control framework, ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory and policy compliance.
    • Develops, embeds and maintains a strong financial control framework, ensuring financial accuracy, reviews corporate accounting processes and makes recommendations and improvements.
    • Strong accounting and finance knowledge and experience related to standard business operations, accounting standards, statutory reporting and parent company reporting.
    • Maintains relationship with Internal and External Audit and ensures annual cycle of audit management activities are completed successfully (and on time).
    • Supervises the efficacy of ICFR management, which includes the strategy, process improvement and implementation of the risk management system including the management of the risk of fraud and controls aimed at ensuring the reliability of financial reporting.
    • Ensures establishment and sustainment of effective tax planning and management of treasury functions.
  • Manages and optimizes usage of multiple, complex financial systems (SAP and/or SAP S/4Hana), general ledgers and programs.
    • The Lead will act as the first point of escalation on multiple projects relating to corporate accounting activities (month-end close, accounting policies, audit, ICFR, IFRS, etc.) to continuously improve and transform systems and processes.
    • Continuously looks for opportunities to generate efficiencies and increase the effectiveness of accounting operations through new ways of working and/or leading class policies and procedures. Leverages know how and experience in project and change management, process improvement and system automation to drive optimal delivery of accounting operations.
  • Change agent who manages, and drives change activities with an eye towards continuous improvement is vital; fosters an environment of accountability, trust and resilience.
    • Serves in a consulting advisory capacity for timely insights and decisions following the current DOA (Delegation of Authority) policy, processes and protocols.
    • The Director will provide effective leadership and high accountability in continuous improvement by ensuring team members have sufficient training, support, resources and personal development plans.
    • Other general accounting duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

 

    • University Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business/Commerce
    • CPA,CA or equivalent designation 
    • 10 – 15 Years, including 5 or more years in a (strategic) leadership position
    • At least 5 years in a complex matrix-based environment with managing people/teams
    • Fundamental understanding of corporate accounting principles and policies
    • Fundamental and in-depth experience managing ICFR standards and principles
    • Experience leading Tax & Treasury portfolios
    • Knowledge of IFRS standards and principles
    • Experience in negotiating and liaising with banks and external parties
    • Proficiency and understanding of SAP S/4Hana and other related accounting software
    • MS Office Suite of programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Teams) at an Advanced Level

 

 

Expertise and Skills

 

    • Proven experience in leading and delivering sustained strategic value through a shared services function and/or centre of excellence with a deep understanding of risk and opportunities for optimizing success
  • Adept at establishing, managing and monitoring KPI and SLA success factors
    • Strong accounting and finance knowledge and experience related to standard business operations, accounting standards, statutory reporting and parent company reporting
    • Deep understanding of corporate accounting activities including month-end close and accruals
    • Strong understanding and experience with fixed asset accounting, project accounting, IFRS, ICFR and associated compliance activities, measures and protocols
    • Deep experience with managing the relationship with auditors and the best practices associated with the annual cycle of audit management activities
  • Demonstrable understanding of end-to-end finance function, including an understanding of tax and treasury functions and their cross-function interaction
  • Strong experience in managing and optimizing multiple, complex financial systems (SAP and/or SAP S/4Hana), general ledgers and programs
    • Strong experience with establishing new ways of working and new policies and procedures; and with re-engineering and elevating existing business, accounting and finance processes
  • Change agent who manages, drives and supports delivery of value-add continuous improvement change activities and efforts to drive optimal operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, emotional maturity and self-awareness with a strong capability to build trusted relationships
  • General understanding of Purolator’s operations across business units and verticals
  • Strong experience in proactive issue resolution and escalation management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid organizational and time management skills with a keen eye and attention to detail
