DESCRIPTION

The Corporate Strategy & Planning team at Purolator works on the company’s most critical initiatives. The team operates as an internal consulting team and focuses on strategy planning and development, industry / market thought leadership, internal and external ventures, and Board reporting.

The Manager, Corporate Strategy & Planning will play an integral role in leading the 5-yr strategic planning process and quarterly Board meeting strategy material preparations. In addition, this role will support a number of projects including the evaluation and execution of key strategic initiatives (identified through the long-term strategic planning process), competitive analysis, and market intelligence and insights. 

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Corporate Strategy & Planning, this role is a highly visible position that interacts with Purolator’s most senior leaders and will play a critical role in defining and supporting Purolator’s growth ambition and future direction.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Play a leadership role in developing the comprehensive 5-yr strategic plan that is presented to the Board of Directors in May each year, working closely with functional business leaders to define priorities and challenge thinking
  • Drive the long term strategic planning calendar – we have recently moved from static annual updates on our 5-yr strategic plan to an on-going planning process to increase organizational flexibility and prioritization
  • Partner with our Strategy Execution, Finance and Communications teams to ensure the 5-yr strategic plan is turned into an operational roadmap and the strategic priorities are properly socialized throughout the organization (your litmus test will be if our Couriers can articulate Purolator’s strategic focuses)
  • Act as an ambassador for the Corporate Strategy & Planning team to articulate the company’s vision and direction to other functional units, teams and peers – you will be asked to present strategy content and perspectives regularly throughout the organization (and potentially externally as well)
  • Drive preparation of strategy materials for quarterly Board meetings and other ad-hoc Board related deliverables (this activity is high exposure getting to partner directly with the C-suite at Purolator, including the CEO and CFO, to help them articulate strategy progress and results)
  • Lead a wide range of strategy projects (in support of the outcomes from the 5-yr strategic planning process) by structuring complex business problems, synthesizing relevant data, and delivering actionable recommendations
  • Be a source of insight for the leadership team on the external environment and its impact on Purolator (today and in the future) by articulating a point of view on market trends, competitor activity, and potential ecosystem game-changers

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years relevant experience at a management consulting firm or in an internal strategy / analytical / corporate development role working closely with senior management
  • Courier, transportation and / or logistics experience is desired but not a pre-requisite
  • Proven project management capabilities; comfortable working under demanding deadlines and producing key senior executive deliverables
  • Comfort and experience facilitating large scale meetings and workshops to support problem solving and functional strategy development activities
  • Proven ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and results in a highly matrixed environment   
  • Experience preparing detailed financial models and working with complex financial information
  • Exceptional personal initiative and good judgment; desire to succeed in a demanding and entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to learn new concepts, processes, and businesses quickly in order to solve problems and produce high-quality output, sometimes in short timeframes
  • Ability to think horizontally / laterally and to effectively collaborate and communicate with stakeholders in all areas of the business
  • Confidence and presence to engage with senior business leaders
  • Strong presentation and storytelling skills to effectively deliver complex, data-driven insights
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • High proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel
