Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health & Disability Management, the Senior Disability Consultant leads the national approach to non-occupational disability management programs, including Short-Term disability (STD) and the Long-Term-Disability (LTD).  The Senior Disability Consultant oversees and monitors the non-occupational disability programs to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations, group insurance contracts, corporate policies and procedures and strategies.  The Senior Disability Consultant, develops and maintains effective relationships with human resources, legal, bargaining groups, leadership, insurance providers and other key stakeholders to ensure that the disability management programs are being supported and managed appropriately within the business.  The Senior Disability Consultant acts as the central subject matter expert for complex STD & LTD cases and complex accommodation & return to work files, ensuring effective program management and delivery.  The incumbent is also responsible for developing and maintaining operating procedures, reporting and metrics and non-occupational accommodation and return to work procedures. 

 

The incumbent must be collaborative, communicate effectively and demonstrate sensitivity to others. They thrive in a fast-paced environment while supporting competing priorities and deadlines. Exceptional skills of Microsoft Office software packages Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point is required. Strong presentation skills are also required. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and diverse stakeholders is essential. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

 

Responsibilities for STD/LTD Cases:

  • Leads, coaches and provides guidance to key business stakeholders in disability management, including disability business rules, policies, programs, practices and administration.
  • Provides direction on all aspects of non-occupational disability management programs in line with best practices, legal and legislative environments, collective agreements, and insurer operating procedures.
  • Subject matter expert for all short-term and long-term disability process guidelines, reporting, compliance with plan provisions and leave of absence management activities.
  • Creation and delivery of communications, presentations, job aids and process documents to ensure there is a clear understanding of programs.  Including but not limited to disability at-a-glance documents, disability operations guidelines, disability overview training.
  • Providing training and education to various stakeholder (ie. human resources, people leaders) on disability management practices, accommodation process and return to work process from a non-occupational perspective.
  • Acts as the central contact person and subject matter expert for Disability Management programs and resolves complex second level issues.   For added clarity, the incumbent is not responsible for day-to-day claims adjudication.  The day-to-day claims management is led by the Human Resources team directly with the disability insurer.
  • Monitors and oversees Disability Management cases to ensure performance and identifies areas of opportunity and provides recommendations for resolution.
  • Long duration case management, including setting best practices and developing procedures for the business on ongoing case management
  • Vendor management with the disability ensure to ensure that provider is meeting contractual SLA’s and following operating guidelines.
  • Make recommendations for interventions, including more in depth medical and psychological assessments to resolve RTW barriers.
  • Lead the review and ongoing maintenance of all short term and long term disability management policies, accommodation procedures and policies and return to work procedures and policies from a non-occupational perspective.
  • Work with various stakeholders to ensure that the policies are meeting the needs of the business and best practices.
  • Establishes, monitors and reports on Disability Management program standards, metrics within the operating area.

 

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in in a health-related field (ie. disability management, human resources management, Kinesiology).
  • Minimum of 4-5 years in a progressive experience in disability management is required.
  • Disability Management certification (CDMP), or open to pursing the designation.
  • Certified Disability Management Professionals designation (CRTWC or CDMP), preferred.
  • Health & Safety program, practices, and procedures experience in an effort to prevent illness and injury from a total organizational health perspective. 
  • Experience working at a large organization within a unionized environment.
  • High energy and a strong work ethic, superior customer service attitude, high attention to detail, ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Intermediate access to Microsoft office for training, guidance and reporting requirements.
